Judy Chicago shares the first-ever limited edition print of her legendary Reincarnation Triptych

Reincarnation Triptych was originally created in 1973 at the height of the women's liberation movement, part of a series of abstract portraits of important historic women, entitled Great Ladies. Uniting three of her most famous works from the series in one piece for the first time, the artist interprets three literary figures: 19th-century philosopher Madame de Staël, French novelist George Sand and modernist writer Virginia Woolf. Each panel features exactly forty words describing the woman represented, written in the Palmer method, a mode of handwriting which the artist learnt as a child. The work epitomises the artist's signature iconography, with its nuanced colour gradients and hypnotising concentric forms.

This 24-colour silkscreen edition has been hand-crafted at our fine art printmaking studio, Make-Ready. It is finished with matte, satin and sparkle gloss varnish – capturing the ethereal quality of Judy's original work.

'The Reincarnation Triptych' grew out of my research into women's history at a time when there was no women's studies, and the accepted thing was that women had no history. I wanted to represent and honour the contributions of women through a series of abstract portraits that prefigured 'The Dinner Party'. The paintings are structured as compositions with a centre square – a reference to the pressure of social convention and women breaking out of the constraints of the construct of femininity, the outer image and the inner image and the fight for dominance.

Judy Chicago Portrait
Judy Chicago3 collaborationsJudy Chicago is a legendary artist who has brightened the future for women in art. Today, she is considered a pioneer of the feminist art movement, but when she began her career the genre barely existed. Born in 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, she grew up in a politically active Jewish household where gender equality was the norm. This progressive upbringing, however, didn't prepare her for the art world’s stark sexist reality. In the 1960s, during her studies at UCLA, she created her now historic Car Hoods (1965) – bold, colorful works featuring yonic patterns on automobile hoods. When the pieces faced harsh criticism from her peers and tutors, Judy's confidence was shaken. So she decided to hide the fact she was a woman by conforming to the male-dominated Minimalist movement of the 1960s. Even while self-restrained by Minimalism, her inert talent for form, color, and composition was inescapable, and the works still garnering much attention in the art world.
