A new limited edition print by Ferrari Sheppard captures his spiritual approach to portraiture.

Originally painted in 2021, the aptly titled Put Some Red On It, is a prime example of the artist’s bold and expressive style that has made him a leading voice of contemporary American painting. A woman sits proudly on vibrant red furniture, in a gold dress and white boots that look like they could be negative space. The layered shades of black, brown, white, gold and red capture the exquisite balance of audacity and sensitivity that Ferrari brings to the painting process, which for him is “100% spiritual”.

This edition, made in close collaboration with the artist, features silkscreen gold shimmer details and a matte varnish seal, designed to emulate the luminous textures of the original work created in acrylic, charcoal and 24-carat gold leaf.

Behind the scenes

Tom Murphy, founder of Make-Ready, discusses the process of translating the luminous texture of 'Put Some Red on It’, bringing Ferrari Sheppard’s original work to life.

The studio is his refuge and when he paints it often feels like “some greater energy is creating the work”. Growing up in Chicago in the 1990s, Ferrari was a self-confessed “art geek”. When it came to college, he gained a place at the prestigious Fine Art Institute of Chicago. However, the overly-conceptual BA programme ended up pushing Ferrari away from painting, and after he graduated in 2004, he started his career as a writer, photographer and music producer. In 2016, Ferrari returned to his “true purpose” in visual art, and began developing his layered, deeply expressive portraits with acrylic, charcoal and 24-karat gold leaf. His audacious signature style garnered much attention in the art world, and almost a decade later he is firmly cemented as a leading figure in contemporary art.
