David Hockney

As one of the most celebrated painters alive, David Hockney remains dedicated to finding new ways to capture the enormity of the world around us.

Born in Bradford, 1937, David moved to London in the late 50s. It was the place-to-be for a twenty-something gay artist. It was there that he started selling his paintings to buy paints and cigarettes.

David has always been fascinated by the way we move through the world and interact with the landscape. LA was his home for 50 years, and there he painted a world of Hollywood Hills, swimming pools and glamorous friends.

Late Spring Tunnel, 2006

Like his father, David slowly lost hearing as he got older. This encouraged him to push the scale of his art.

If you lose one sense you gain other senses and I feel I could see space clearer.
